The 16thLINE gallery has arranged several major collaborations with important European galleries in its exhibit space for a year and a half. Since September 2012 the gallery has engaged in promoting young artists from the South of Russia in the European and Russian art scenes. We present the first solo exhibition with Rostov artist Alexander Selivanov: Myths of the Geometric Forest.

Alexander Selivanov, born in Rostov-on-Don in 1978, works in abstract minimalist manner. His individual meditative style has not been labelled by critics yet.

The artist, in his own words, seeks inspiration in several schools of abstract painting: from American minimalism and colour field painting to Kazimir Malevich's suprematism. His creative reference figures in XX century abstract art include a full constellation of names. Among them are Mark Rothko, Piet Mondrian, Frank Stella, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelly and Agnes Martin.

Selivanov's new series consists of 11 large abstract paintings. The artist called the series: "Myths of the Geometrical Forest". It continues the line taken by Selivanov around 5 years ago - in the very beginning of his career as an artist. Before that Alexander was  involved in making experimental music for many years. These works are unusually concentrated and meditative. And every one of them is a true example of external worldly chaos's transformation into a harmonious and balanced minimalist abstract painting.

The new exhibition differs from the previous ones since for the first time it features monochrome paintings.

The name of the exhibition is inspired by the idea of its exposition - putting an abstract, not fully comprehensible, philosophically charged "forest" of paintings inside the gallery's space. "The geometrical forest", just like any real one, has its sound. Namely, silence.

The exhibition is accompanied by a sound-art installation - a loopback digital sample.

On view: from December 27, 2012 to January 27, 2013.
